WalkAbout Computers Debuts Hammerhead XRT Rugged Tablet PC Running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Operating System

West Palm Beach, FL, Nov 07, 2002 —WalkAbout Computers, Inc., a leading manufacturer of rugged tablet computers serving mobile workers in the utility, public safety/EMS and other vertical markets, unveiled their new rugged Tablet PC today at Microsoft’s Tablet PC Operating System Launch in New York City. The Hammerhead XRT is the newest edition to WalkAbout’s expanding line of rugged Tablet PCs and docking stations.

“WalkAbout has been designing, manufacturing and bringing rugged Tablet PCs to market for more than twelve years. We are proud to be on the forefront of the Tablet PC evolution,” cites David Grainger, chief executive officer at WalkAbout Computers. “With Microsoft’s new Windows XP Tablet PC platform, our new Hammerhead XRT will enable users to run full Windows-based applications using true pen input, through digital ink capturing, as well as speech recognition. We consider our collaboration with Microsoft an important milestone in delivering the most natural, versatile and productive mobile computing experience to our customers.”

“There is a lot of interest among our customers for a rugged Tablet PC,” said Alexandra Loeb, vice president of the Tablet PC division at Microsoft Corp. "WalkAbout’s rugged and dependable mobile computing solutions, combined with Microsoft’s powerful new operating system, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, offer a full PC experience to many industries and environments where PC’s have simply not been utilized before."

Designed to meet MIL-STD 810E specifications, the Hammerhead XRT Tablet PC will perform flawlessly in freezing temperatures, pouring rain and other demanding situations and delivers reliable mobile functionality wherever work gets done – whether it’s behind a desk, on the road or out in the field. The Hammerhead XRT features a vacuum-sealed, rugged aluminum housing, 128/256/512 MB RAM, 20/40 GB hard drive, legacy dock compatibility, and dual hot-swappable batteries for seamless operations and improved productivity.

The Hammerhead XRT’s performance is powered by the Mobile Intel® Pentium® III processor - M with Enhanced Intel® SpeedStep® Technology, which enables greater speeds and lower power consumption for long-lasting performance. "Intel is pleased Walkabout Computers chose to base their newest ruggedized Tablet PC, the Hammerhead XRT, on the Ultra Low Voltage Intel Pentium III processor - M, which offers great performance, low power and long battery life," said Anand Chandrasekher, vice president and general manager, Intel's Mobile Platforms Group. "Intel and WalkAbout Computers are working together to incorporate the high performing, reliable Intel Architecture-based mobile platform into an industrial strength, fanless form factor that delivers pen-based computing to demanding environments such as construction, manufacturing, transportation, and the military."

Hammerhead XRT demo units will be available in January 2003.
