Food Lion Selects WalkAbout Computers for Added Efficiency in New 'Bloom' Concept
West Palm Beach, FL, May 27, 2004 — WalkAbout Computers, Inc. a leading designer and manufacturer of rugged tablet computers for mobile workers, has contracted to supply their rugged Hammerhead RT mobile computers to Food Lion LLC, one of the largest supermarket chains in the United States. Food Lion plans to open five pilot stores to test a new store concept, format and brand name.
The pilot stores, called "Bloom, A Food Lion Market™," all scheduled to open by the end of 2004, will incorporate the Hammerhead Tablet PCs into their new, tehnologically advanced management structure. The first Bloom store opened May 26 in Charlotte, N.C.
Bloom stores will use the mobile Hammerhead computers with wireless data communications as a tool to effectively monitor and manage store conditions. Replacing desktop computers, the mobile Hammerhead RT will allow store and department managers roaming ability to maintain operating efficiencies with data synchronization and full network access.
Bloom managers will have real-time access to all pertinent data such as work orders, status updates, order completion information, inventory statistics and all scheduled projects. In addition, managers will complete data collection projects and update data directly from any location within the store premises.
In addition to the mobility benefits, the Hammerhead RT also offers the many advantages of a rugged computer. Resistant to dust, dirt, spills and moisture, this lightweight, rugged PC is easy to operate and withstands the harsh work environment of supermarket grounds.
"Supermarkets are experiencing increased pressure to improve efficiency and customer service. Offering a high degree of rugged capabilities and proven durability, the Hammerhead is the most flexible and reliable computing tool for the new Bloom concept store," according to David Grainger, WalkAbout's CEO.
"Bloom stores are being designed to serve customers by providing a simple, uncomplicated and hassle-free shopping experience," said Robert Canipe, Food Lion vice president of business strategy. "Customers will quickly notice Bloom's new approach to store design, layout and merchandising. Bloom also will test some of the proven leading-edge technologies in the retail industry. The objective behind the technologies is to enhance the shopping experience and help customers find products, get information and check out with greater ease."
