Office of Supplier Diversity: Mentor Protégé

The DoD Mentor-Protege (MP) Program was enacted in 1990 (Public Law 101-510) under the direction of former Senator Sam Nunn and Secretary of Defense William Perry. This program was established to provide incentives for (major) DoD prime contractors (Mentors) to help small disadvantaged businesses (SDBs), qualified organizations that employ the severely disabled, and women-owned small businesses (Proteges) develop technical and business capabilities. The goal of the program is to assist Proteges to successfully compete for prime contract and subcontract awards. More information on the DoD Mentor-Protégé Program is available under Defense Federal Acquistion Regulation Supplements (DFARS) Subpart 219.71, Pilot Mentor-Protégé Program and DFARS Appendix I.

DRS Tactical Systems, Inc. was approved on November 21, 2009, by Joseph E Misanin, Deputy Director for Program Operations Office of Small Business Programs, on November 21, 2009, to participate as a mentor in the Department of Defense (DoD) Mentor-Protégé Program.

DRS understands the value of and have benefited from the mentor-protégé program.  Paravant Computer Systems. Inc. was a Protégé of Raytheon from 1997 to 1999 prior to the acquisition by DRS Technologies, Inc. The protégé relationship helped shape and position Paravant for acquisition and was instrumental in DRS’ emergence as the leader in support of the war fighter with the rugged tactical computers and display systems.

DRS Tactical Systems, Inc. was approved for a credit agreement and participation in the Department of Defense (DoD) Mentor-Protégé Program. The period of performance on the agreement is February 9, 2009 through February 8, 2010.

This is DRS Tactical Systems’ inaugural mentor-protégé agreement and we look forward to other opportunities to work with and assist other small businesses as we continue to develop and grow our Supplier Diversity Program.
